5 Ways to Enjoy Kava With Loved Ones

Kava has always been a drink meant for sharing. Made from the ground root of Piper methysticum, a South Pacific plant in the pepper family, it has been prepared and passed around in communal gatherings for centuries. That spirit of togetherness is exactly what we love most about it — so here are five of our favorite ways to enjoy kava with the people you care about.

1. Gather at the Kava Bar

Kava bars are known for their openness and sense of community, and we may be biased, but we think everyone should have their first bula at a lounge like ours. Pull up a seat at the bar, settle into the tiki atmosphere, play a board game, or just chat — whether you arrive with a group or on your own, someone will almost always strike up a conversation.

2. Share a Kava Flight

Can't decide what to try? Our kava and elixir flights let you sample four flavors for $16.50 — perfect for passing around the table and comparing notes with friends.

3. Make It a Happy Hour Tradition

Join us Monday through Wednesday from 4–7pm for Happy Hour: $3 single shells, $6 double shells, and $8 loaded lixirs. It's an easy, affordable way to make kava night a weekly ritual with your crew.

4. Learn the Traditional Ceremony Together

Kava is rooted in the cultures of many Pacific Island communities, and learning the traditional etiquette is a fun way to connect with that heritage. In a Fijian-style ceremony, guests sit in a circle around the communal bowl, called the tanoa. Kava is served in a half coconut shell called a bilo. Before drinking, clap once and say "Bula!" — Fijian for "hello" or "life" — then finish the shell, clap three times, and say "Maca!" to signal you're done.

5. Plan an Alcohol-Free Date Night

Looking for a night out that doesn't revolve around alcohol? Elixir Lounge is an alcohol-free venue for guests 18 and up, open seven nights a week — great conversation, no hangover the next morning. Check our events calendar for live music and special nights.
