Ancient Origins

The exact birthplace of kombucha is lost to history, but most accounts trace it to Northeast Asia around two thousand years ago, with China cited most often as its point of origin. From there, fermented tea culture spread gradually along trade routes through the region.

How Kombucha Got Its Name

One popular naming legend credits a physician called Kombu, who is said to have brought the fermented tea to the Japanese imperial court centuries ago — "Kombu" plus "cha," the word for tea. Like much of kombucha's early history, it's a story passed down rather than a documented fact, but the name stuck.

Kombucha Around the World

From Asia, kombucha made its way to Russia and Eastern Europe, where fermented tea drinks became a household tradition, and then onward into Western Europe in the early twentieth century. In recent decades it has become a global favorite, with craft brewers around the world experimenting with fruits, herbs, and botanicals — and it remains one of the most popular alcohol-free options anywhere.
