Celebrate the Full Moon With Kava

For centuries, kava has been a ceremonial drink in the South Pacific. In Fiji, it is shared at important gatherings and celebrations of all kinds: weddings, funerals, family get-togethers, even sporting events. Today, kava fans around the world borrow that communal spirit for their own occasions, including marking the full moon with friends.

A Full Moon Kava Gathering

Gather your supplies:

  • 4–5 cups of water (filtered if possible)
  • A strainer bag or cheesecloth
  • Kava root powder (follow the amount on your package)
  • 3–4 candles
  • A comfortable place to sit
  • Some quiet music

Then set the scene:

  1. Gather in a circle and light your candles.
  2. Place the kava powder in the strainer bag or cheesecloth and fold it over several times so it holds together.
  3. Knead the bag in the bowl of water until the water turns an opaque tan, then set the spent root aside.
  4. If you like, open with a simple intention. Many groups use a phrase such as "I release what no longer serves me."
  5. Starting on the left and moving clockwise, each person takes a turn sipping from their shell or cup. Anyone can pass.
  6. Between rounds, share what you're grateful for from the past moon cycle.

Once everyone has had a turn, guests can help themselves to more kava as they see fit. Before you close the evening, take a moment to reflect: What did this past moon cycle look like, and what do you want the next one to hold? Is there anything you're ready to set down?

Make It Your Own

A full moon kava gathering is really just an excuse to slow down with people you like. Tailor it to your taste with different kava preparations, decorations, music, or a few minutes of quiet meditation. There's no wrong way to share a bowl.
