How Many Ways Can You Prepare Kava?

Kava is a traditional beverage made from the ground root of Piper methysticum, a plant in the pepper family that grows throughout the South Pacific. For centuries in places like Fiji and Vanuatu, the root has been prepared with water, strained, and shared communally, traditionally from coconut shells. If you're brand new to kava, start with our guide to kava, then come back for the how-to.

There are several ways to prepare it at home, and each yields a slightly different cup.

The Traditional Method

Historically, kava root was ground by hand and strained through natural plant and coconut fiber. The essentials haven't changed: ground root, water, kneading, and a good strain.

Cheesecloth or Strainer Bag

The most common modern method. Place the kava powder in a cheesecloth or strainer bag, submerge it in room-temperature water, and knead it for several minutes until the water turns an opaque tan. Squeeze out the bag, discard the spent root, and serve.

Blender

A quicker option: blend kava powder and water for one to two minutes, then strain the mixture well. The result is a smoother drink with less arm work.

Shaker-Style Strainers

Purpose-built kava shakers hold the powder behind a fine mesh while you shake the vessel, filtering as you go. Models vary, so follow the instructions that come with yours.

Pre-Made Mixes

Some brands sell pre-measured kava mixes where everything is portioned for you: just mix and pour. Finely ground powders may need a little extra water or mixing time to avoid clumps, so follow the package directions.

And if you're an experienced kava drinker with your own perfected routine, by all means, stick with it!
