Kava Drink Recipes: Holiday Edition
The winter holidays are just around the corner, and if you're looking for a new tradition to warm up the season, try one of our favorite kava drink recipes. Both are alcohol-free, so there's no hangover waiting on the other side of the party, and both taste great with either dairy or almond milk. Want to make things extra special? Add a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon on top.
Kava Eggnog
Eggnog without rum? Yes, please! This recipe makes two servings, so share the holiday fun with a loved one.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup kava root powder
- ½ cup cool water
- 2 cups eggnog
How to prepare:
- Place the kava powder inside an 8" x 8" square of cheesecloth and wrap the ends tightly together. No cheesecloth? A strainer bag works too.
- Submerge the wrapped kava powder in the water and knead it gently. Massage until the water turns an opaque tan with a slight sheen, then discard the spent root.
- Combine the eggnog and the kava mixture in a blender until smooth, about 30 seconds. Enjoy!
Holiday tip: Try it with a dash of ground nutmeg for extra holiday spirit!
Kava Hot Cocoa
Kava is traditionally prepared cold, but it can be served warm too. Just keep the temperature below 140° Fahrenheit when preparing it. Kava's earthy flavor pairs surprisingly well with chocolate, so why not kava hot cocoa this holiday season?
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup kava root powder
- ½ cup cool water
- 2 cups milk or nut milk
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons granulated or cane sugar (or a pinch of stevia, to taste)
How to prepare:
- Place the kava powder inside an 8" x 8" square of cheesecloth and wrap the ends tightly together. A strainer bag works as well.
- Submerge the wrapped kava powder in the water and knead it gently. Massage until the water turns an opaque tan with a slight sheen, then discard the spent root.
- Place the milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the cocoa powder and sugar and stir until dissolved, with no lumps.
- Remove the saucepan from the stove. Add the kava mixture and vanilla extract, and whisk until frothy.
Cooking tip: The ideal temperature for the warm milk is around 120° Fahrenheit (49° Celsius).
Holiday tip: Add marshmallows for some holiday fun!
