Kava & Mindfulness: A Short Guide
Mindfulness is everywhere these days, but the idea itself is ancient: paying full attention to what you're doing, where you are, and what you're feeling, right now. At Elixir Lounge, we're fans of anything that encourages people to slow down, and a shell of kava makes a natural companion to a quiet, intentional evening. Here's a short guide to pairing the two.
What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is simply the practice of being present. Rather than emptying your head completely, the goal is to let thoughts come and go naturally while you stay aware of your body, your breath, and your surroundings. People practice it through meditation, yoga, walking, painting, music, or any activity done with full attention. It sounds easy; it takes practice.
What Is Kava?
Kava is a traditional beverage from the South Pacific, made from the ground root of Piper methysticum, a member of the pepper family. For centuries in places like Fiji and Vanuatu, the root has been kneaded in water, strained, and shared from a communal bowl, traditionally sipped from coconut shells at gatherings and ceremonies. That unhurried, communal ritual is exactly why kava and mindfulness pair so naturally: both invite you to slow down and pay attention. Learn more in our guide to kava.
A Simple Kava + Mindfulness Ritual
- Prepare your kava with attention. Notice what your hands are doing. Watch the water fold over the strainer bag, feel the texture of the root powder, and take in the earthy aroma.
- Find a comfortable seat. A couch or armchair works well; skip anything that spins or wobbles.
- Sip slowly. Notice the temperature, the peppery taste, and the weight of the shell or mug in your hands.
- Settle in. Plant your feet, rest your hands in your lap, and let your eyes close or unfocus. Imagine your thoughts as waves, flowing in and out without your control.
- Count your breaths. In for one, out for one; in for two, out for two, up to ten, then begin again.
- Check your posture. Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, and sit tall without straining.
- Continue for five to fifteen minutes. Ten is a comfortable starting point.
- Land softly. When you're ready to finish, listen to the sounds around you, wiggle your fingers and toes, and open your eyes slowly.
