Pumpkin Spice Kava Chai Recipe

We love this recipe because it brings two of our favorite things together: cozy holiday spice and the earthy flavor of kava. It's a fun one to serve at gatherings, and it comes together in about ten minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 pumpkin spice rooibos chai tea bags
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin spice coffee creamer
  • 2 pints hot water
  • 4 tablespoons prepared kava
  • 1 teaspoon each of pumpkin spice, nutmeg, and cinnamon
  • 4 cinnamon sticks (optional)

Makes 4 servings.

Instructions

  1. Put the tea bags into a heatproof bowl.
  2. Add the hot water, taking care when handling the hot bowl.
  3. Let the tea brew for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the tea bags and stir in the kava.
  5. Stir well.
  6. Add the creamer.
  7. Top with a pinch of pumpkin spice, nutmeg, and cinnamon, plus a cinnamon stick if you're feeling festive.

Grab your favorite mug and pour away! This recipe serves up to four people, and you can scale it up or down for your crowd. It pairs beautifully with a slice of pumpkin pie, a turkey dinner, or sweet potato casserole.

Tips

A whisk or immersion blender helps mix everything smoothly and avoid clumps. You can also turn this into a latte by using hot milk instead of water; just add a little sugar if you like it sweeter.

More About Kava

New to the kava world? Kava is made from the root of Piper methysticum, a plant in the pepper family native to the South Pacific. Traditionally, the ground root is kneaded in water, strained, and served in coconut shells at communal gatherings, a practice that goes back centuries in places like Fiji and Vanuatu. The flavor is earthy and peppery, which is exactly why it plays so well with bold spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Learn more in our guide to kava.
